Hunter Valley Wine Tasting

Broke Fordwich is renowned for its Hunter Valley classics, Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz, and increasingly the premium quality of its Verdelho. More recently it has seen the successful introduction of Italian varietals such as Fiano, Areneis, Barbera and Sangiovese.

The wines of Broke Fordwich are slightly richer and softer in style (particularly those grown on the Fordwich Sill) whilst still maintaining their unique Hunter Valley characteristics.

The Cellar Doors are small family owned, award winning businesses. You’ll find gems only available from the Cellar Door and meet the people that grow and make the wines; the pace is slower; you won’t be pushed out by large crowds and tour groups meaning you get to truly savour the experience and wines.

Harvest time in Broke is usually around February and into March.

Most of our Cellar Doors are open for the weekend (they’re busy in the vines and during the week), with a couple open seven days and others by appointment during the week.

The Wine Region of Broke Fordwich

Broke Fordwich was first planted to grape vines back in the early 1900’s by first world war soldier settlers. Vineyard plantings boomed in the late 1980’s and 1990’s with significant expansion occurring throughout the region with over 475 hectares growing and over 35 grape growers. The main producers in the area established themselves during that period and included Margan and Krinklewood Biodynamic Vineyard. It was during this period of expansion that many new varieties were introduced to grow alongside the traditional Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz.

The sub-region was granted its own GI in 2003, based on its soil makeup and the mesoclimate created by various local waterways and the sheltering hills to the west. It was the first sub-region declared for the Hunter Valley and the second in Australia. Not only is there less rain here than further east in Pokolbin, but the increased distance from the Pacific coast means a higher diurnal temperature variation allowing for quicker ripening whilst still maintaining the natural acidity of the grape.

The Fordwich Sill, a plug of red volcanic clay which runs through the area, is the weathered product of ancient volcanic eruptions and brings valuable trace elements to the Broke Fordwich vineyards, including basalt and iron. The soils it creates are favorably compared to the famous ‘terra rossa’ of Coonawarra. Thought to be unique in the world, ‘terra rossa’ has been recorded only in Coonawarra and some areas of Eastern Europe. While being free-draining, its cell structure absorbs moisture quickly and releases it slowly – an important bonus for inland, high-latitude (32.5 degrees south) regions such as Broke Fordwich. The vineyards planted on the Fordwich Sill were planted by Lindemans and Saxonvale back in the late 1960’s and early 70’s are still producing grapes and making excellent styles of varietal Hunter Valley wines.

In addition to the red soils, local vineyards are also planted on free-draining alluvial soils and sandy loams which produce particularly fine Semillon – the variety for which the Hunter Valley is best known.

Photo of Elysium Vineyard

Elysium Vineyard is the home of rare aged vintages of Gold medal Elysium Limited Release Verdelho, awarded 92 by James Halliday, and described as “consistently successful” by wine writer Huon Hooke. For those who like a mature white, Elysium wines are made to age in the traditional Hunter style, but equally can be enjoyed as young, fresh wines.

Elysium Vineyard is a 2-acre block in Broke Fordwich, Hunter Valley, and is owned and operated by Victoria Foster. The vines were planted in 1990 using root stock from the original Tulloch 8-acre verdelho vineyard adjacent to Elysium, which was planted in 1936. Since 1995 the wine has been exclusively made by Tyrrell’s Vineyards.
